The Lord has filled my heart with Joy! ( 1 Sam. 2:1)

The secret to an effective Choir warm-up is to keep it fresh and not let it become routine. For the warm-up is not only to get the singers' voices cranked up, but also to switch on the musical side of their brains!
You want to create a concentrated atmosphere conducive to work and at the same time you'll put your choir into good form for a long and hard practice.
Put yourself in the ordinary choir member's shoes – a hard day's work often full of frustration, the boss in a bad mood, a difficult journey to rehearsal ... all these circumstances will militate against a good practice. You'll have to replace these bad vibes with good humour and positive attitudes – and this is the real purpose of the choir warm-up.
So how should you set about it? Be sure to give a warm welcome to your singers – they need to know that you're pleased to see them! A cheerful greeting that brings forth a smile will work wonders in helping them to change over from Work mode to Choir mode.
Now you can break your warm-up into three parts:
- Touch
- Breath Control, Scales, and Vocal Exercises
- Aural Training.

Keep the warm-up to about 10 minutes or less.

Touch
A tactile approach to the warm-up will help weld your choir into a team without any damaging inhibitions. During rehearsal there is always the possibility that a singer will make a fool of him or herself, and the embarrassment caused can prevent them from singing properly.
The aim of the tactile approach is to give your singers the confidence not to crumple when they're under pressure. Touch can eliminate the shyness or stage fright that can sometimes cause serious problems.
Ask your choir to hold hands while singing a warm-up exercise or a scale. Ask them to move in time to a short piece that you play on the piano - a waltz or a pop-song - while holding hands. If you have a masseur in the choir you can encourage gentle neck massage. This will help your singers achieve relaxation - the first step towards creating the correct physical tension necessary for rehearsal or performance.
The similarity between athletics and singing is striking – both involve the entire person and both demand people who are totally at ease with both their minds and bodies.

Breath Control
Breath control is as essential for the singer as it is for the athlete. A good singing teacher will help you understand breathing technique. There's a subtle difference between solo and choral breathing, and you'll need to assimilate this.
Ask your teacher to help you devise warm-up exercises that will benefit your singers. Vocal support is essential and exercises to develop the diaphragm are invaluable.
Design exercises which will enable your singers to sustain long phrases without running out of breath. I've occasionally brought in a good and lively singing teacher to work with my choir on breath control. This is always helpful – not least because choirs tend to take the expert and revered singing teacher more seriously than their own conductor!

Scales (สเกลเสียง)
When practicing scales start with downward ones. Vary their speed and seek a unanimity of vowel sound – this is essential for good choral singing. When you sing upward scales always take the choir a third higher than they will go in service or concert. This will give their high notes security in performance.
Sing chromatic scales and see if your singers can perform them without going flat. It’s not easy - judging an accurate semi-tone is difficult. Sing a full-tone scale and, for fun, a diatonic scale on a rolled r sound. Try it – it’s possible!

Vocal Exercises
Here are two warm-up exercises I have found useful.
1. Tonic, Mediant, Dominant, Sub-mediant, Dominant, mediant and Tonic on one vowel sound and take the choir high a step at a time. This gives your singers a great sense of the "choral arch".
2. Tonic (minim or half-note) Tonic an octave higher (minim or half-note) and then down the scale making each note a crotchet or a quarter note. Again, go high with this, a step at a time.
Devise your own warm-up exercises in conjunction with your teacher, but do remember that each singer will have their own range. Don’t ask altos and basses to sing in the soprano and tenor range and vice versa.
Lastly, you can use quick tongue-twisters. They can be sung to scales – a whole tongue-twister per note. These are always fun and usually break down in hearty laughter! "Red lolly, yellow lolly, Red lolly, yellow lolly" and "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers" work well. Of course you can compose your own, but I find the choir enjoy finding new tongue-twisters for their warm-ups themselves.

Aural Training in the Warm-Up
The purpose of this part of your warm-up is to encourage your singers to listen intelligently. Remind them that each must be able to hear the person next to them. They should never forget that they are part of a whole and that the whole is more important than the individual. Ask your choir to identify major and minor chords; pick out individual notes from chords and sing in parts the chord that will resolve the dominant seventh that you play (you will need to give them examples of this).
It’s fun to play a single note and ask your choir, on your down beat, to add all the notes that will turn your original into one great big chord, so, if you play C you will hope to hear your choir sing E, G, C in many different registers! Devise your own warm-up exercises to cope with particular problems.
Make your aural training fun and you can, of course, always introduce an element of competition. For example, ask the men to identify major or minor chords and then the women – find out who’s best at it!
A well warmed-up choir is a prelude to a good practice. You will need to be continually inventive, discovering new exercises and stratagems, always on the lookout for original ideas and always seeking a humorous and light-hearted approach to this most important section of a choir practice. The Choir warm-up is great fun – enjoy it!

Basic Practise Choir :
The Choir
The Practice Choir is a friendly, informal, adult four part choir based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The singers are mainly amateurs and no auditions are required to join the choir. However, it is necessary to be able to sing in tune and in the case of lower voices, to be able to hold a harmony line. We work with a professional conductor, Bruce Davis, and pianist/organist Jeremy Cull and we aim to provide high quality concerts two or three times each year.
You can find out more information about the choir on the following links:

Singing : Choir

Singing : Choir

Sing-along, community singing, group singing, is an event of singing together at gatherings or parties, less formally than choir singing. One can use a songbook. Common genres are patriotic songs, hymns and drinking songs. Children across the world usually sing nursery rhymes together.

Rise Up Singing is a popular folk music fake book containing chords, lyrics, and sources to 1200 songs. It does not include notation of the songs' melodies (with the exception of the two sections on rounds) and assumes that a user will know the tune to many of the songs. It was first published in 1988 by Sing Out!. It is edited by Peter Blood and Annie Patterson. The book has 35 different categories of songs arranged in alphabetical order, plus an artist index, subject index, and title index.
Since the book includes only lyrics and chords without notation, it is relatively compact in size and also relatively inexpensive. Recordings of the songs (now available on CD) have been made for each section of the book to be used as a learning tool. Only enough of the song is included to learn the tune, not all verses are sung.
The book is very popular having sold over a million copies.[1] In the United States there are monthly singalongs where groups gather to sing selections from Rise Up Singing.

Sing Out! is a quarterly journal of folk music and folk songs that has been published since May 1950.

Come and Sing: Choir

Come and Sing: Choir

A "come and sing" event offers people who enjoy singing the opportunity to form a temporary choir ("scratch choir") to rehearse and/or perform choral music, often within a single day.
These events are ideal for people who would otherwise be unable to commit to regular membership of a choir, or who wish to try choral singing for the first time. Usually the music is familiar to those who attend – e.g. Handel's Messiah, Fauré's Requiem, Verdi's Requiem – though the programme may be chosen to coincide with a festival or other special occasion or time of year or day (e.g. evensong, Nine Lessons and Carols).
"Come and sing" events seem particularly popular in the United Kingdom.

Skills involved in choral singing

Skills involved in choral singing

Choral singers vary greatly in their ability and performance. The best choral singers possess (among others) the following abilities:

to sing precisely in tune (on the correct pitch) and with a vocal timbre (or color) which complements the other singers;
to sing at precisely controlled levels of volume, matching the dynamics marked in the score or prescribed by the conductor, and not sing so loudly as to be markedly detectable as an individual voice within the section;
to sight-read music fluently;
to read and pronounce the text accurately and in the pronunciation style specified by the leader, whatever the language may be. This includes correct diction, proper vowels and timing of diphthongs, and correct placement of consonants;
to understand and interpret the music and to reflect that understanding in the vocal production of the music;
to remain completely alert for long periods, monitoring closely what is going on in a rehearsal or performance;
to monitor one's own singing and detect errors, correcting them as they go along,
to accept direction from others for the good of the group as a whole, even when the singer disagrees aesthetically with the instructions;
to produce a healthy and pleasing tone through the use proper vocal technique;
to sing using pure vowels through vowel tracking to match the group;
Singers who have perfect pitch require yet other skills:
to sing music in keys other than that in which it is written, since choirs often sing music in transposed form.
to stay "in tune" with the ensemble, even in the event the ensemble modulates slightly away from "perfect" pitch
to provide ensembles with the key or starting pitch that a piece begins on, usually with unaccompanied pieces.

Layout on stage of Choir

Layout on stage
There are various schools of thought regarding how the various sections should be arranged on stage. In symphonic choirs it is common (though by no means universal) to order the choir behind the orchestra from highest to lowest voices from left to right, corresponding to the typical string layout. Since 2000 several choirs introduced the historic layout of the 17th –19th century with the choir in front of the orchestra, so the American North Penn High School Concert Choir [1], the Canadian Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, the German Kreuznacher-Diakonie-Kantorei and the French Chapelle Rhénane. In a cappella or piano-accompanied situations it is not unusual for the men to be in the back and the women in front; some conductors prefer to place the basses behind the sopranos, arguing that the outer voices need to tune to each other.
More experienced choirs often sing with the voices all mixed together. Proponents of this method argue that it makes it easier for each individual singer to hear and tune to the other parts, but it requires more independence from each singer. Opponents argue that this method loses the spatial separation of individual voice lines, an otherwise valuable feature for the audience, and that it eliminates sectional resonance, which lessens the effective volume of the chorus.
For music with double (or multiple) choirs, usually the members of each choir are together, sometimes significantly separated, especially in performances of 16th-century music. Some composers actually specify that choirs should be separated, such as in Benjamin Britten's War Requiem.
Consideration is also given to the spacing of the singers. Studies have found that not only the actual formation, but the amount of space (both laterally and circumambiently) affect the perception of sound by choristers and auditors.[2]

Structure of choirs

Structure of choirs

Choirs are often led by a conductor or choirmaster. Most often choirs consist of four sections intended to sing in four part harmony, but there is no limit to the number of possible parts as long as there is a singer available to sing the part: Thomas Tallis wrote a 40-part motet entitled Spem in alium, for eight choirs of five parts each; Krzysztof Penderecki's Stabat Mater is for three choirs of 16 voices each, a total of 48 parts. Other than four, the most common number of parts are three, five, six and eight.
Choirs can sing with or without instrumental accompaniment. Singing without accompaniment is called a cappella singing (although the American Choral Directors Association[1] discourages this usage in favor of "unaccompanied", since a cappella denotes singing "as in the chapel" and much unaccompanied music today is secular). Accompanying instruments can consist of practically any instruments, from one to a full orchestra; for rehearsals a piano or organ accompaniment is often used even if a different instrumentation is planned for performance, or for rehearsing a cappella music. While Eastern Orthodox churches and some synagogues ban the use of instruments, in churches of the Western Rite the accompanying instrument is almost always an organ, although in colonial America, the Moravian Church used a string quartet. Many churches which use a contemporary worship format will have a band in the sanctuary to accompany the singing.
Beside the leading of singing in which the congregation participates such as hymns and service music, choirs still sing the full propers (introit, gradual, communion antiphons appropriate for the different times of the liturgical year) at a few churches, chiefly those of the Anglican or Roman Catholic churches; far more common however is the performance of an anthem at the offertory. Roman Catholic Churches use, at their discretion, additional orchestral accompaniment.
Choirs can be categorized by the voices:
Mixed choirs (i.e., with male and female voices). This is perhaps the most common type, usually consisting of soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices, often abbreviated as SATB. Often one or more voices is divided into two, e.g., SSAATTBB, where each voice is divided into two parts, and SATBSATB, where the choir is divided into two semi-independent four-part choirs. Occasionally baritone voice is also used (e.g., SATBarB), often sung by the higher basses. In smaller choirs with fewer men, SAB, or Soprano, Alto, and Baritone arrangements allow the few men to share the role of both the tenor and bass in a single part.
Male choirs, with the same SATB voicing as mixed choirs, but with boys singing the upper part (often called treble or boy soprano) and men singing alto (in falsetto), also known as countertenor. This format is typical of the British cathedral choir.
Female choirs, usually consisting of soprano and alto voices, two parts in each, often abbreviated as SSAA, or as soprano, soprano II, and alto, abbreviated SSA
Men's choirs, usually consisting of two tenors, baritone, and bass, often abbreviated as TTBB (or ATBB if the upper part sings falsetto in alto range like barbershop music, even though this notation is not normally used in barbershop music). Occasionally, a men's choir will have Basso Profondo, the lowest of all male vocal ranges.
Children's choirs, often two-part SA or three-part SSA, sometimes more voices. This includes boys' choirs.
Choirs are also categorized by the institutions in which they operate:
Church choirs
Collegiate choirs
School choirs
Community choirs (of children or adults)
Professional choirs, either independent (e.g., Philippine Madrigal Singers, Anúna) or state-supported (e.g., National Chamber Choir of Ireland, Canadian Chamber Choir, Swedish Radio Choir etc.)
Finally, some choirs are categorized by the type of music they perform, such as
Symphonic choirs
Vocal jazz choirs
Show choirs, in which the members sing and dance, often in performances somewhat like musicals

Choir :

Choir

A choir, chorale, or chorus is a musical ensemble of singers. Choral music, in turn, is the music written specifically for such an ensemble to perform.
A body of singers who perform together is called a choir or chorus, The former term is very often applied to groups affiliated with a church (whether or not they actually occupy the choir) and the second to groups that perform in theatres or concert halls, but this distinction is far from rigid. "Choir" has the secondary definition of a subset of an ensemble; thus one speaks of the "woodwind choir" of an orchestra, or different "choirs" of voices and/or instruments in a polychoral composition. In typical 18th to 20th century oratorios and masses, chorus or choir is usually understood to imply more than one singer per part, in contrast to the quartet of soloists also featured in these works.

Catholic Choir dress

Catholic Choir dress
Choir dress is worn by the Catholic clergy when they are not celebrating Mass. Usuallly this is a rochet trimmed with lace. Cardinals wear red, bishops purple, and canons black. There are local differences.
